Getting a Library Card

Who is entitled to a card?

Anyone who lives, works, owns property or attends school within the city limits of Alexandria is entitled to a free library card and allowed full use of the facilities.

Library privileges are extended to those who live in the following counties or cities: Arlington, District of Columbia, Fairfax, Falls Church, Fauquier, Frederick, Loudoun, Prince George's, Prince William and Montgomery.

Anyone who is temporarily living in Alexandria for less than six months can receive a temporary resident card. For this card, there is a non-refundable $10 fee. With this card, temporary residents can only take out four items at a time.

How do I sign up for a card?

Visit any of the four branches of the Alexandria Library.  Please bring proof of your current address and a valid photo ID.  For children under 11, a parent or legal guardian must bring proof of current address and valid photo ID and must sign the library card application. If you would like to print out a library card form to bring to any of the four branches, please click here.
