At the intersection of Prince and Washington Streets, stands Appomatox Monument,
erected in 1889 by the surviving Confederate soldiers to the memory of their
dead comrades. This was the place where the southern soldiers gathered, and from
which they marched south on May 24th, 1861, the beginning of the Civil War.
