This project was implemented by a Special Collections volunteer, Rita Holtz, in June 1999, and picks up where Obituary Notices from the Alexandria Gazette, 1784-1915. Rev. ed., published by Willow Bend Books ended.

We intend to publish this index directly to the web as each calendar year is completed.   Library staff members and volunteers are simultaneously indexing succeeding years for obituaries and this information will be added to what we hope will be a dynamic online reference resource.   At the same time, we are indexing for marriages and births.   When this information is available for complete calendar years, web pages will be developed to assist the researcher.   Please bear with us; bookmark this page, and check back often.

This update includes obituaries indexed for 1918 and 1919.   Due to the influenza epidemic, the volume of published obituaries nearly tripled from 1917 to 1918.   Of the approximately 1600 obits included in this update, nearly half are from 1918.   Of particular interest to the researcher is that quite a number of persons are listed several times.   Often, the first listing is the death notice and subsequent listings provide detail as to the arrangements and family member names and/or addresses, church affiliation, and burial location.
