Download eBooks on EBSCO

Alexandria Library offers eBook download capabilities for some EBSCO titles which can be downloaded onto your computer and read offline at a later time or transferred onto Apple devices. Adobe® Digital Editions 1.7.1 or higher is required for offline viewing. This free software can be downloaded from this link.

NOTE: Users must create a new and unique account for use during the Preview only. Information stored (including username, password and eBook information) will be deleted after the Preview ends.

Download an eBook to computer for TRANSFER to a device


To download an eBook to computer for OFFLINE reading:

  • Click the Download (Offline) link for the eBook you would like to download.
  • Select a Checkout period from the drop-down menu and click the Checkout & Download button.
  • The eBook is added to the Checkout area of the folder, accessible from the upper-right corner of the EBSCOhost interface. If you are not logged into your My EBSCOhost folder, you are prompted to do so.
  • Select to Open or Save the file from the resulting dialog box.
  • If you Open the file, your eBook is opened with Adobe® Digital Editions.
  • If you Save the file, the eBook is saved to your computer and can be opened with Adobe® Digital Editions at a later time.
  • When a downloaded eBook is opened, it is displayed in Adobe® Digital Editions.

 

If the eBook you have chosen to download is in use by another patron, you have the opportunity to place a hold on the eBook to download when it becomes available. Enter your e-mail address in the field provided and click the Place Hold button. The eBook is placed in the Holds area of your My EBSCOhost Folder. When the eBook is available, you are notified via the e-mail address you provided and the eBook appears in the Checkouts area of your folder.

 

 

To download an eBook to computer for TRANSFER to a device:

Some eBooks on EBSCO can be downloaded and read using an Apple device (iPhone, iPod, or iPad) using the Bluefire reading app available for free from iTunes. Use the following steps if your device does not have a wireless connection and you will be using your computer to transfer the eBook.

Note: Your device must be running iOS 3.2 or higher.

 

You will need the following software:

  • Bluefire Reading App (Installed on your device

Install the Bluefire Reader Version 1.2 onto your device. Bluefire is available for free from iTunes at the following link: Bluefire Reader via iTunes

  • iTunes 10.0 or higher

Install iTunes. Download Apple iTunes onto your computer for free.

  • Adobe Digital Editions

Install Adobe Digital Editions to your computer for free.

During installation, you are prompted to ‘Authorize Computer’. If you do not already have an Adobe ID, click the link in the next section to get one.

Create an Adobe Digital Editions ID.

**Note: You must authorize both Adobe Digital Editions and the Bluefire app with your Adobe ID.**

 

Checkout and Download an eBook

Next, locate an eBook you wish to download to your device and use the following steps to download it.

 

To download an eBook:

  • Click the Download (Offline) link for the eBook you would like to download.
  • Select a Checkout period from the drop-down menu and click the Checkout & Download button. 
  • The eBook will be added to the Checkouts area of the folder. If you are not logged into your My EBSCOhost folder, you will be prompted to do so.
  • Select Open in Adobe Digital Editions and click OK.

 

Digital Editions sees the .acsm file, automatically downloads the PDF and unlocks the file's Digital Rights Management (DRM). The book can now be read in Digital Editions.

 

Transfer the eBook to your device

After downloading the eBook to your computer, you must find the (.pdf or .epub) file on your computer and use iTunes to transfer it to the device.

Digital Editions stores your eBook files in a default location on your computer:

On OSX: your-home-directory/Documents/Digital Editions
On Windows: your-home-directory/Documents/My Digital Editions

 

Once you have located your eBook file, use iTunes to transfer the eBook to Bluefire Reader.

To transfer the eBook to Bluefire Reader:

  • Connect your iPad, iPhone or iPod touch with Bluefire Reader v1.2 (or higher) to the computer that has iTunes, Digital Editions, and the eBook file on it. 
  • Your device should appear under Devices in the left column of iTunes.
  • Click on your device in the left column.
  • Click on the Apps tab for your device at the top of the main iTunes window. 
  • The File Sharing panel appears under the Sync Apps panel.
  • Click on Bluefire or Bluefire Reader under Apps in the File Sharing panel. 
  • The eBooks you have in Bluefire Reader appear in the Documents list to the right.
  • Click the Add... button at the bottom of the Documents list and browse to your library book in the Digital Editions default documents directory and then choose the file. 
  • iTunes transfers the file to your device and Bluefire Reader automatically adds this item to your Bluefire Reader Library.
  • Open your eBook in Bluefire Reader to begin reading.
