1850 Census Index - Alexandria & Alexandria County, Virginia

This index was derived from Alexandria Virginia City and County 1850 Census transcribed by Marjorie D. Tallichet and published by Heritage Books, Inc. in 1986.   This project corrects sorting errors which occurred in the index published with the book.

The following was transcribed by the Special Collections Staff and includes only the name of the individual as enumerated and his or her family entry number in the census.   As such, it puts an individual in a place, at a time and is useful for genealogical researchers.   For the complete census record for an individual, the researcher is advised to consult "Population Schedules of the Seventh Census of the United States, 1850, Roll 932, Accomack, Albemarle, Alexandria Counties."

According to the notes, the census was implemented on 3 July 1850 and was completed 18 January 1851.   Among the totals are: 3,388 white males; 3,830 white females; 2,09?[sic] col'd males; 2,337 col'd females; 586 males slaves; and 859 female slaves.   Further, there were enumerated: 1483 dwellings; 1545 families; 144 farms; and 177 deaths were noted.

One must be cautious about the designation "families."   There are several dozen otherwise unrelated persons with the number "1383" after their names.   These people were the teachers and students who resided in Benjamin Hallowell's Alexandria Academy, a boarding school.   Likewise, there are numerous instances of boarding homes and hotels in which otherwise unrelated persons are identified with the same family number.
