Obituary Index to the Alexandria Gazette, 1916-1946
This project picks up where Obituary Notices from the Alexandria Gazette, 1784-1915. Rev. ed., published by Willow Bend Books ended.
We intend to publish this index directly to the web as each group of five years is completed. Library staff members are simultaneously indexing succeeding years for obituaries and this information will be added to what we hope will be a useful online reference resource. Please bear with us; bookmark this page, and check back often. In capturing this information, we are not discriminating between local and non-local people; therefore we indexed the obits for Presidents Woodrow Wilson and Warren G. Harding, the perennial presidential candidate William Jennings Bryan, the late revolutionary, Leon Trotsky, as well as the Queen Mother Alexandra, among others, not that we expected particularly strong associations between these people and Alexandria and Northern Virginia.
This update includes obituaries indexed for 1941-1946 and the index now totals over 42,700 entries. Please note, some of the data files are very large and may take a few moments to load. Of particular interest to the researcher is that quite a number of persons are listed several times. Often, the first listing is the death notice and subsequent listings provide detail as to the arrangements and family member names and/or addresses, church affiliation, and burial location. With the group of obituaries published from 1926, we began to see memorials published in succeeding years which explains what might appear to be a confusing set of publication dates.
Photocopies of the obituaries indexed are available.
