LIBRARY PAGE – PT/10 HOURS (2 TEMPORARY POSITIONS)

BEATLEY CENTRAL LIBRARY

BURKE BRANCH LIBRARY

 

           

The Alexandria Library is looking for a dynamic team player to join the Circulation team at the Beatley Library. The ideal candidate will have exceptional customer service skills and the desire to contribute to a busy, central library.  

 Duties:                   

  • Shelving library materials.
  • Sorting book carts.
  • Checking shelf order.
  • Shifting books in order to maintain neat and appealing shelves.
  • Clearing book drops.
  • Assisting other staff as requested.
  • Assisting patrons with locating information and materials.
  • Dusting, organizing and clean up as necessary.
  • Additional duties as assigned which may include Circulation Desk functions.

 

Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to read, write, count and communicate well with others in English.
  • Good alphabetic and numeric skills.
  • Be responsible and reliable.
  • Be able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Have the ability to work harmoniously with both the public and co-workers.
  • Ability to work independently on feet standing or walking for periods up to an hour.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, lift and stretch in order to manage materials.

                      

Minimum Requirements:

High School Diploma or GED is required; some college education is preferred. You must be able to physically lift and carry materials either loose or in bags/boxes weighing up to 40 pounds. Must be able to push fully loaded book carts. A knowledge of, or willingness to learn, library practices (including the use of computers and other technologies) is necessary. Previous library experience is helpful.

 

Schedule:             

This position is 10 hours per week. Hours are scheduled to meet the needs of the branch and will include every other Saturday, 10am-5pm.

                                                                                   

Compensation:                  

$13.671 per hour

LIBRARY AIDE – PT/15 HOURS (2 TEMPORARY POSITIONS)

BARRETT BRANCH LIBRARY

BURKE BRANCH LIBRARY

  

 

The Alexandria Library is looking for enthusiastic individuals to join the Circulation team at the Ellen Coolidge Burke and Kate Waller Barrett Branch Libraries (two positions available). The ideal candidates will have exceptional customer service skills and the desire to contribute to a busy library. Under the direction of the Circulation Manager, these positions are responsible for direct customer service to patrons.


Duties:                   

  • Register patrons for library cards, check items in/out and retrieve materials for patrons.
  • Answer questions and direct phone calls.
  • Collect fines and fees associated with library services.
  • Assist patrons with searches, locating materials, using online databases, computers, printers, self- check machines, photocopiers and change machines.
  • Organize materials to be shelved.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

 

Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the public.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, lift and stretch in order to manage materials.

                      

Minimum Requirements:

High School Diploma or GED is required; some college education is preferred. Library Page (Page I) experience is desirable. Physically lift and carry materials either loose or in bags/boxes weighing up to 40 pounds. Must be able to push fully loaded book carts. A knowledge of, or willingness to learn, library practices (including the use of computers and other technologies) is required. Other library experience, customer service experience, office work, or volunteer experience can be applied.

 

Schedule:             

15 hours per week. Hours are scheduled to meet the needs of the library and will include Saturday hours. 

                                                                                   

Compensation:                  

$13.719 per hour

LIBRARY OPERATIONS SUPERVISOR – PT/30 HOURS

ALEXANDRIA LAW LIBRARY

Under the direct supervision of the Deputy Director, the incumbent is responsible for the daily operation of the Law Library. The Operations Supervisor is the primary contact for the public when accessing and utilizing the Law Library’s resources. This position requires professional work of a confidential nature, independent judgment, initiative and discretion.


Duties:                   

  • Answers all types of legal reference questions using traditional, electronic, and internet sources in an efficient and courteous manner.
  • Assists customers in selecting and locating materials.
  • Plans and conducts programs relating to consumer law and legal issues.
  • Assist patrons with searches, locating materials, using online databases, computers, printers, self- check machines, photocopiers and change machines.
  • Stays abreast of trends in legal information and resources.
  • Makes recommendations for the Law Library collection, including reference and print resources.
  • Conducts shelf reading and weeding of collection.
  • Demonstrates use of catalog and electronic databases to customers.
  • Interprets policies and procedures of the library to the public.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

 

Skills, Abilities and Experience:

  • Ability to communicate clearly and in a friendly and positive manner with staff and library customers from diverse ethnic, socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds.
  • Comfort with working independently, within established policies, procedures and guidelines.
  • Ability to maintain records and prepare written reports.
  • Ability to supervise and coordinate the work of others, including volunteers.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Knowledge of integrated library systems and technology.
  • Knowledge of legal resources, including print materials and online databases.
  • Experience in a library or educational setting.
  • Enthusiasm for the work and a willingness to try new things.

                      

Qualifications:

Minimum: A Bachelor’s Degree and at least one year of experience working at the equivalent of a Library Assistant III level. Prior experience in a library and/or law firm or performing legal research is highly preferred.

 

Schedule:             

30 hours per week. Hours will be scheduled to meet the needs of the Alexandria Library. 

                                                                                   

Salary:                  

$21.78 - $23.71 per hour, depending on qualifications. 


Benefits:

Eligible for pro-rata annual and sick leave, health insurance, life insurance, disability insurance and retirement plans. The City’s promotional policy states that an employee who is promoted will receive an 8.5% increase plus transition up to the closest step of the new grade, or placed at the minimum of the new grade, whichever is higher. An employee’s new promotional salary may not exceed the maximum salary of the new pay grade.
