James M. Duncan Branch Library
Monday-Thursday: 9am-9pm |
Named for the long-serving City Councilman and member of the Library Board James M. Duncan and expanded by 5,000 square feet, the branch re-opened on September 22, 2005. The renovations include a naturally lit adult reading area, a green roof (see below), and an exciting new and enlarged children's area. An additional entrance is provided on Commonwealth Avenue. Nine Internet computers are available to patrons as well as wireless Internet access.

Green Roof
Duncan is the first City of Alexandria building with an ecologically-friendly
rooftop, often referred to as a Green Roof. The vegetation and soil of
a “green roof” reduce rain water to sewer run-off and naturally filter
water that is discharged. A green roof also acts as an insulator by greatly
reducing the indoor temperature within a building especially during summer
months. Duncan’s Green Roof was sown in early September 2005 with a variety
of sedum; the same plants have been sown in the landscaping of Duncan
Library grounds, so patrons can see the plants of the green roof without
a long ladder or a swing crane!
